Rosemary

Working with our elderly clients is an especially rewarding part of our jobs as ILS workers.  As part of our job is to teach, I find that when working with the older population, quite often they can teach us a great deal as well.    

Born ninety-seven years ago in 1910, Rosemary is one such client.  She has seen a lot of changes in her lifetime, lived through two world wars, and watched technology advance drastically.  She has many stories to tell and observations to note.  “The biggest change is there just isn’t the personal service anymore.” she says.  “Now everything is a recording.”

Rosemary raised four children, three sons and a daughter, was widowed years ago, and never remarried because “no one could live up to him.” She attributes her stubbornness to living such a long life.  Her zest for life, spunky spirit, and great sense of humor are contagious. 

Until recently, Rosemary lived independently in her own apartment.  She went out in the community with her ILS worker weekly, and accepted assistance with paperwork as needed.  She always has a book sitting by her bedside and still does the daily crossword puzzle out of the newspaper.  She also does word puzzles in books, reads to kids, and loves to play Bingo. “It all keeps your mind sharp.” she says

Rosemary moved into a nursing home last year, but she is still one of the most active residents.  She always says she loves working with ILS and doesn’t know what she would do without it.  In reality, working with her actually means we are the fortunate ones.
